Chillin’ with George
The amazing Uta Uber Kool Ja really captured the audiences in 2012, with her parties in a comfortable suite at the Richmond Hotel. She’s back in 2013, along with her long-suffering assistant George.
“Uta is delighted to be returning to Adelaide,” George says matter-of-factly, “because she’s reviled in so many parts of the world that it’s good to know we can go somewhere that I’m not likely to get beaten up protecting her! It doesn’t do for me to be treated like that, because now I’m Uta’s manager. Admittedly it’s mainly because the agent and the publicist all left. Even her pharmacist. It’s a tough job.”
The moment Uta’s return to Adelaide was announced, the social media lit up. “I call it the Adelaide Army of Love,” George says with satisfaction “When she was in Sydney last year these two delightful Bears flew over from Adelaide just to go to one of Uta’s parties. I hope they come to her interstate parties again. She needs more bodyguards, I think they should be called the Bear Division. It’s not for me. I have the light frame of a Frenchwoman.”
Uta’s shows are unique. Twenty or so people in the room experience the full gamut of her glamour, her moods, her passion, her dance, her drama. It’s a hectic time of it, and George needs help. “Uta has always had an assistant called George”, he explains. “I don’t know what happened before I turned up, but the day she met she asked me if I liked the name. I said yes, and it stuck. But it suits me. I mean, I sleep at the end of Uta’s bed like a dog, and she kicks me all the time. So I don’t have much time for dating, though sometimes I brush past a likely beau. A quick chat on Grindr. You know what I mean!”
He may be content in his servile role, but George does have some dreams. “I’d love to be on the cover of blaze,” he begs, “Uta’s on the cover of Adelaide Magazine and it would be wonderful to have a cover-off, though she’d beat me for it. I want the Adelaide boys to see me! I’m planning to sneak out some nights and do a bit of hosting with the gorgeous Fez Fa’anana in the Fringe Club, so come along there and tell me how much you love me!”
Uta Uber Kool Ja plays from March 5-16. Book at Fringetix.
