Asher Treleaven’s Comic Strip
Comic Strip fairly took the Fringe by storm when Melbourne-based comedian Asher Treleaven thought up the idea a few years ago. He spoke to Peter Burdon.
“I’ve been doing the Adelaide Fringe for about ten years now,” Asher explains, “but it was about three years ago that I thought there was a niche for a late night comedy show that was adult, and a bit rude, and very risqué, and I was keen to take advantage of the interest in burlesque in Australia at the moment. So Comic Strip was born.”
And it’s grown like the proverbial topsy. From a few nights between other gigs, Comic Strip will run for four solid weeks in 2013, and the Romantiek will be the venue of choice from 11.30 pm! And Asher is promising a star-studded line-up. “Our biggest star is Lada Redstar,” he says, “She’s literally direct from Paris and is making her Australian debut here. We’ve been wanting to work with her for ages since we met her, if you can believe it, at a party at the Bastille! She won the World Burlesque Crown last year and she’s phenomenal. Very European, very eastern bloc, and she’s performing with Gypsy Wood, who was fantastic last year. And we’ve also got the reigning king of boylesque Mark Winmill doing spots, as well as Agent Lynch who caused such a riot with her squirting milk last year.”
On top of that, there’ll be spots from the best local and overseas comedians throughout the night, with Asher hosting in his inimitable style.
