Getting Kinky with EastEnd Cabaret
Author // Peter Burdon Categories // Theatre | Entertainment
The racy, raunchy, gin-loving creators of EastEnd Cabaret return to Adelaide in 2013 with Notoriously Kinky. They spoke, in sultry voices, with Peter Burdon.
“It came as no surprise to us when we won the Cabaret Award in 2012,” Bernadette Byrne says without regard to modesty, “it was brilliant, and richly deserved! We loved the Adelaide audiences. A great time, so many beautiful people, and all good with the dirty songs!” Bernadette’s deep, raspy continental tones are merely part of the mystique of EastEnd Cabaret.
So successful was the season of EastEnd Cabaret in 2012 that in 2013, they’re playing, quite remarkably, for the entire Fringe from go to whoa. “We’ve been getting our new show ready for Adelaide,” Bernadette continues, “by breaking it in at the Edinburgh Fringe. It’s even ruder than the last one.” “But we’ll have new costumes for Adelaide,” chimes in Victor, “I’m making a half-man half-woman bathing outfit.” “It’s horrible,” mutters Bernadette, “You should never wear lycra.” “Oh, but the Australians love their Speedos,” Victor continues, “And in this costume I’ll be smuggling at least one budgie!” Bernadette demurs, “And I will not be seen with you on the beach! In any case I will be under a black umbrella in the shade.”
Their current show, the latest incarnation of their celebrated Notoriously Kinky, was described in last year’s five star Edinburgh Fringe review as being alternatively titled “Gleefully Filthy”. “I don’t know why some of these people raise their eyebrows,” says Bernadette, “doesn’t everyone sing about losing their virginity and doing clever things with ping pong balls?” You get the drift! “Oh!” she cries, “and we will continue our endless search for the best Gin Bar in Adelaide!” Not to be outdone, Victor adds, “And we are also recruiting for the half moustache army!”
The unmissable, unmatchable EastEnd Cabaret performs nightly at 10 pm in La Cascadeur on just about every day of the Fringe, and they’re promising spots in shows all over the place besides. Suckers for punishment, and we’re the winners.
