True Blood: OMG Eric and Jason hook up
Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t watched this week’s episode of True Blood read no further...
Last night True Blood opened with a scene worthy of a Mills and Boon novel, which saw Viking vamp Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard) and Sookie’s brother Bon Temp police officer Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten) hook up.
It was the kind of soft core sex scene that bodice busting romance novels are made of, full of lingering looks and soft lights illuminating the boys’ best assets.
When the show opens, Eric, last seen bursting into flame is miraculously unharmed and at a villa – think opulent, new romantic Tuscany – he’s gazing off into the distance when Jason arrives with only Eric on his mind. Shirts are stripped off, there’s lots of throwing onto the bed action and then Eric and Jason kiss. Then bam! Cut to Jason waking up... Yep it’s all a dream. It’s a gambit the show has used before – but what it has to do with the actual plot remains to be seen.
The Twittersphere erupted after the scene, with fans going wild for the guy-on-guy action. It seems everyone’s been waiting for a bit of steamy Jason and Eric sizzle between the sheets, and it looks as though the show’s runners are finally giving in to fans’ demands.
But not everyone is happy with the flippant way the Jason and Eric storyline has been handled. (One could say what storyline?). The Wire called out the show runners for delivering “pandering soft core with zero story weight” while Buzzfeed took a more humorous approach. Yet in a show that seemingly knows no boundaries, True Blood has been remarkably coy when it comes to gay dalliances. Where the heterosexual relationships are given plenty of screen time, same-sex relationships are rarely taken seriously.
So what was the purpose of the Eric and Jason hook up?
Will some major plot point eventually be revealed?
Do we really care?
And most importantly when will Jason have another dream?
