Aussies to star in mini-series on gay rights

Aussie actors Rachel Griffiths and Guy Pearce are set to star in a new mini series on gay rights, set in the US. The series called When We Rise will also star long time LGBTI advocate Mary Louise Parker of Weeds fame and follows the stories of a group of activists fighting for gay rights in America.

The series has been penned by Milk scribe, openly gay Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black. The opening two hour episode will be directed by Milk alumnus Gus Van Sant, who has also signed on to executive produce the series.

The series follows the real-life stories of several men and women who assisted in delivering powerful legislative reform for LGBT people in the US.

Griffiths and Parker will play power activist couple Diane and Roma Guy and Pearce is slated to star as activist Cleve Jones

The story will play out across seven episodes.

The production is yet to cast the roles of trans activist Cecelia Chung and African-American community organiser Ken Jones.
