Step Right Up: Hats Off! 2012
This year’s Hats Off!, the annual HIV/AIDS fundraiser, takes its cue from famed Coney Island.
Organised by Oz Showbiz Cares/Equity Fights AIDS Inc, Hats Off will this year feature the casts of Love Never Dies, Annie The Musical and Ordinary Days as well as a host of individuals from Rachael Beck, Minnie Cooper and Lucy Durack to Amy Housewine, Peter Cousens and Jack Vidgen.
Producer Peter Silver tells SX this year’s theme is Coney Island and the touring tent shows of yesteryear featuring artists with “freakish” talents.
“It’s a chance for us to be a bit silly, off the wall and quirky with artists who all have a unique quality, such as the wonderful Paul Capsis who’ll be joining us this year,” Silver says.
“We have, of course, veterans of the stage, but we also nurture young talent coming up through the ranks, like Jack Vidgen who, for a 15-year-old, has a freakish vocal talent.”
“It’s brilliant that this annual show is acknowledged by audiences and the industry as one of the best theatre nights of the year,” he says.
The wide variety of entertainment gives the audience “a good bite of the apple”, as well as allowing artists and audiences to give back to the community.
Since 1997 Oz Showbiz Cares / Equity Fights AIDS Inc has raised over $750,000 for services to people affected by HIV/AIDS.
“We really take our hats off to the artists and the audience as well as the production team who make it all possible.
“And it’s a fun night – it’s a riot!”
Australian stage royalty Nancye Hayes agrees. Currently performing in Annie The Musical, Hayes says that she is looking forward for her turn to shine on the Hats Off! stage.
“Hats Off is a major event in our theatre calendar eagerly anticipated by both performers and the patrons who support it in ever growing numbers,” Hayes says.
“Every year the line up of talent is stellar and audience reaction exhilarating.
“So if you want a great night’s entertainment, be there and make a difference.”
