Roxette dress for success with 2015 Australian tour
There’s no slowing down Swedish pop duo Roxette, who are coming to Australia with a national tour in the summer of 2015. Reg Domingo speaks to Per Gessle.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the hit single, ‘The Look’, reaching number one on the Billboard US Chart. Released in 1989, this track launched one of the world’s most successful pop-duos: Roxette. To date, Roxette – Marie Fredriksson and Per Gessle – have sold more than 75 million albums worldwide. Their hits including ‘Listen To Your Heart’, ‘How Do You Do’, ‘Spending My Time’, ‘Joyride’, ‘Dangerous’, ‘Sleeping In My Car’, ‘Dressed For Success’, ‘It Must Have Been Love’ and, of course, ‘The Look’, topped the charts and remain radio favourites.
Ahead of the 2015 Australian tour, Gessle opens up about music, longevity and Australia.
SX: Roxette has been going strong for over 25 years, which is no mean feat in the world of music. How does it feel to still be connecting with fans after three decades?
PER GESSLE: It’s a blessing. You can never take success for granted and we’ve been very lucky to have a fab catalogue of songs and a great fan base who has been supporting us through thick and thin. Without the fans this wouldn’t have been possible.

Many of our readers will have grown up with your music. And many will have owned your breakthrough record Look Sharp! in their collection. How do you recall that period when Roxette finally caught the world’s attention?
It’s a big jolly blur! We were really surprised by the response, especially in the US which is a tough market to crack. Success meant we worked our asses off for seven years before taking a break when Marie had her second child. Travelling, recording, performing. But we loved it, of course. Still do.
Many songs from the 80s and 90s can sound dated today, but Roxette’s tracks have a timeless quality. Indeed, ‘It Must Have Been Love’ and ‘Listen To Your Heart’ continue to receive wide radio airplay. What goes through your mind when you hear your earlier songs on the radio?
Yes, I agree wih you. For some reasons quite a few of our songs have stood the test of time pretty well. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because we never tried to be fashionable.
I flew into Miami and the guy checking the passports asked me what my occupation was.
I told him I was a songwriter and he asked me if I could mention a song I’ve written he might know. They were playing ‘Listen To Your Heart’ in the speaker system at the airport.
And I answered: “Well, I wrote this one!”
I hear those songs all the time. It feels good.

You’re touring Australia in 2015. What do you want to say to your Australian fans?
Oh, we love to play in Australia! Since day one, we always felt very welcome and we’ve made lots of Australian friends over the years. So, we’re certainly looking forward to coming back and will do our best to make every show something to remember!
