On a night like this
Kylie fans in Sydney are in for a treat with the arrival of Bar Kylie.
“I was obsessed with the oddity of this cafe in London I used to go to occasionally, Cafe Diana, which had images of Princess Diana everywhere – not a single bit of wall was free of her face,” event producer Paul McNally tells SX.
“I thought, if they can make an average cafe for a princess, I could create an awesome bar for our own princess, Kylie, the ‘Princess of Pop’. So I registered the pop-up with Midsumma earlier this year – and then had to make it all happen!”
And so Bar Kylie was born.
“It was incredible, our two ticketed nights [in Melbourne] sold out in record time,” McNally says. “I didn't quite realise the dedication of Kylie's fans. Many people have turned out for every Kylie event we've done. They're the super K fans.
“The peak, though, was that Kylie herself tweeted best wishes to the Bar Kylie punters. We also got a spot on The Project. Dannii blogged about the bar – but best of all, everyone had a great time. One guy tweeted afterwards that it was the greatest night of his life.”
Now it’s Sydney’s turn with Bar Kylie taking over the Imperial Hotel on Saturday, September 6. The venue’s basement bar will be transformed into a shrine to Kylie with DJ Argonaut playing Kylie non-stop Kylie hits, and Minnie Cooper and Vanity Faire performing in a Kylie tribute show.
“We're going all out on the decoration, floating glitter ‘K’s everywhere and Kylie as you've never seen her before – in 7-foot posters,” McNally says.
As such, he urges punters to play their part.
“Dress it up,” McNally says. “Kylie concert t-shirts are very popular. As are album t-shirts. The hair-hat image [from Kylie’s debut album] is one of the favourites.”
Bar Kylie: Spring Fling is on Saturday, September 6, 9pm, at the Imperial Hotel, 35 Erskineville Road, Erskineville. Tix $25 from www.facebook.com/BarKylie
