It’s a great day for actor Mahershala Ali whose performance in director Barry Jenkins’ gay-themed coming of age flick, Moonlight, has earned him a best supporting actor gong.

Best known for his roles on TV dramas, Crossing Jordan, The 4400,  and House of Cards Ali broke into the movie mainstream when he scored the role of Boggs in The Hunger Games.

The star has been praised for his sensitive performance in Moonlight and also featured in another Academy nominated movie, Hidden Figures.

Accepting the award for Best Supporting Actor, Ali thanked friends and family for their support.

“I want to thank my teachers, my professors.

“I had so many wonderful teachers, and one thing that they consistently told me. . . [is] it wasn’t about you. It’s not about you. It’s about these characters.”
