Looking for a great documentary to sink your teeth into at Mardi Gras Film Festival? Consider director Cecilia Aldarondo’s Memories of a Penitent Heart which follows the filmmaker’s quest to discover the truth about her uncle who died when she was young.

Family members had always told Cecilia her uncle Miguel died from cancer but she believes ther is more the the story and starts investigating the life of the man from her childhood she just remembers…

Cecilia soon learns that her uncle moved to Manhattan after being ostracised from very religious Puerto Rican family for his sexuality. She meets his former partner Robert and discovers the real story of her uncle’s life.

The documentary crosses lines of religion, family, love and of course the shadow of the stigma of HIV/AIDS.

Incredibly moving, Memories of a Penitent Heart looks at the ways we grieve, forgive, and survive.

This special Mardi Gras Fulm Festival screening is being co-presented by Bobby Goldsmith Foundation.

Check it out on Friday February 17 at 9pm at Event Cinemas. Book now.
