Big Gay Day presents Lee Dagger and the Search for Hidden House Gems
Lee Dagger from UK dance music outfit Bimbo Jones is coming to The Wickham for Big Gay Day this month. He spoke with Andrew Shaw about finding that perfect beat.
They’ve remixed for everyone and were the team behind the UK No. 1 single ‘Thunder In My Heart Again’ but right now, Lee Dagger, part of UK dance music production team Bimbo Jones, is listening to music from the dawn of the noughties.
“Believe it or not, I’m listening my old tunes from 15 years ago,” he tells QP. “I just found all my old vinyl and some DJ mixes recorded on CD back in 2000-2005. There are some great tunes there, which will add some ideas for future new music.”
Dagger, along with co-producer Marc JB and vocalist Katherine Ellis, has taken Bimbo Jones to the top of the dance charts scoring No. 1’s in the UK and US for their remixes of Kylie, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Britney and The Pussycat Dolls.
Dagger is doing a DJ set at Big Gay Day, the last stage of an Aussie trip that saw him play the Mardi Gras parties and Perth gigs. He says he’s looking forward to “working the crowd with lots of great music! Can't wait for it!”
Famous for his remixing skills, Dagger says he likes to listen to a track a capella before he remixes it, “that way you can imagine different ways to take the production”. “We start by creating some chords and a bassline adding beats and trying to see what’s the strongest, then continue from there.”
Highlights of his career, he says, include DJing for Pink, playing at Glastonbury, boat parties in Ibiza, and the Sydney Mardi Gras Harbour Party. “And dancing to early Carl Cox sets from 1990 and DJ Sasha piano house sets from 1991 will always hold a place in my heart.”
Legend has it there are loads of Bimbo Jones tracks unreleased, thanks to their prolific output. “Yes, Marc JB and I have so many tracks unheard in the Bimbo vault. Pop songs with Spice Girl Emma Bunton, dance songs with Cyndi Lauper, and heaps more. It will all see the light of day one day.”
