In a Daywash Spin
He’s made waves on The Ellen Degeneres Show and the runways of New York. Now, DJ Corey Craig is all set to make a splash at Daywash this Mardi Gras weekend, writes Daniel Chamberlain.
Prepare for an afternoon of sexy beats and sweaty dance floors at Daywash. As one of Sydney’s hottest circuit parties held during the Mardi Gras season, it promises to serve up some of the best local and international DJ talents on the scene, including the unmistakable upbeat disco sound of DJ Corey Craig.
Recalling his last set at the Oxford Hotel where the “entire crowd was singing along and grabbing whomever was closest”, Corey cherishes some of his previous Mardi Gras moments as absolute career highlights.
“I can’t wait to get over to Sydney to have break from cold depressing east coast weather and get the chance to flirt with Aussie boys,” he tells SX.
First hitting the big time after submitting an audition video to DJ on The Ellen Degeneres Show, Corey has since gone on to play at music events all around the world. However, he is arguably most known for providing the live soundtrack for major fashion events such as National Underwear Day, Diesel, Perry Ellis, 2Xist, Marc Ecko and Loris Diran.
Urging the community to embrace themselves as well as each other, he also believes this year’s festival will offer something different and special because “equality is getting closer and closer”.
“We need to refocus and stop segregating based on trivial physical differences,” he says. “Everyone is relevant.”
Daywash producer Johan Khoury also reiterates that Mardi Gras is a time when the gay community from all around the globe should come together to celebrate our differences as well as our common goals.
“I simply want to compliment this united vibe and use Daywash and the after-party SpinOUT to bring everyone that little bit closer in a more intimate space the day after the parade,” Johan tells SX.
Johan does reveal that this Daywash cycle will be spinning a new set of twisted and “inappropriate shenanigans”.
“Our mission is always to do better than the last Daywash,” he says.
“Let’s face it, topping our New Year’s Day event where we turned the place upside down and sideways with miniature donkeys, live crocodiles and pythons will be a challenge. But trust me when I say, we have done it.”
