All-star cast to star in ABC1's 'Carlotta' telemovie
From working class Balmain boy to Showgirl, ABC1’s production of Australia’s most famous transsexual performer – Carlotta - looks set to be a smash.
A universal story about identity, family, tolerance and acceptance, Carlotta lays bare the life of a confused teenager named Richard, his fight into the hedonistic Kings Cross of the 60s and 70s and his transformation into Carol, despite the threat of criminal prosecution and social rejection.
The telemovie stars Packed to the Rafters’ Jessica Marais as Carlotta/Carol/Richard and will be supported by a stellar cast including Alex Dimitriades, Paul Capsis, Caroline O’Connor Genevieve Lemon and more.
Carlotta pushed the boundaries of gender and sexuality long before Australians were aware of what the word transexual meant, and was an ambassador for rebellion, freedom and self-expression.

The production is written by David Hannam (Winners and Losers) and directed by Samanta Lang (The Monkey’s Mask) with story consultation by Carlotta.
Carlotta herself has praised the production and expressed her hope that it inspires others who may be coming to terms with their sexuality.
“I am absolutely delighted and flattered that this story is being brought to the screen, as my main motivation is to show anyone who may be struggling with their gender, or struggling to gain acceptance from their family and society at large – that you can do it. Stand tall, know who you are and be proud of yourself, as acceptance comes from within.”
Carlotta will premiere on ABC1, Thursday June 19 at 8.30pm
