Online petition calls for Health Minister Sussan Ley to allow access to PrEP
An online petition is calling for the Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley to approve the use of Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) in Australia.
The petition was launched by Victorian AIDS Council of Australia.
The petition suggests PrEP’s effectiveness in assisting those at risk of acquiring HIV has already been proven given recent study results revealed at the Seattle conference.
The petition acknowledges that PrEP is not a replacement for safe sex but has proved effective in combating transmission of the virus.
“As an HIV prevention strategy, PrEP is not a replacement for condoms. Instead it is a strategy for people who cannot consistently use condoms and who want to avoid HIV."
The American government recognised PrEP's effectiveness and approved its use in the USA in July 2012.
The Australian Government recognised PrEP as an effective HIV prevention strategy in the recently launched 7th National HIV Strategy 2014 - 2017.
The petition says despite this recognition, PrEP has failed to be approved for use in Australia.
“The VAC calls on the Minister to do everything within her power to expedite the approval of PrEP in Australia.
